Beckham story in ‘public interest’

DAVID and Victoria Beckham lost a legal attempt to stop the News of the World printing fresh allegations about their marriage yesterday.

New revelations about the couple from their former nanny were published across seven pages in late editions of the paper.

The story gave further details concerning beautician Danielle Heath, who has previously claimed to have had an affair with Beckham.

It also alleged that nanny Abbie Gibson 27, had witnessed a series of rows between the celebrity couple.

The nanny claimed that Mrs Beckham had told her the England captain wanted to split up.

The couple sought an injunction against the paper in the High Court on Saturday night claiming the nanny was in breach of a confidentiality contract.

The News of the World said the judge ruled in its favour on the grounds that the story was in the public interest.

The couple’s lawyers had argued that the nanny’s contract had included a promise not to speak about the couple’s private lives.

News of the World journalist Phil Taylor, one of the reporters who covered the story for the paper, said: “The industry recognises that when the News of the World does print a story we go to incredible lengths to prove that every single fact we publish is correct.”

He said the newspaper did not ask the Beckhams for comment on the allegations. “We did not ask the Beckhams for comment on their relationship. The reason is that we knew from past experience that they would apply for an injunction to try to cover up the truth. The News of the World would be very happy to sit down to talk to David and Victoria and hear what they’ve got to say. As always what we want to know is the truth.”

A spokesman for the Beckhams said: “We are consulting our lawyers with a view to taking legal action.”

Asked why allegations about the Beckhams’ marriage were in the public interest Mr Taylor said: “The Beckhams, Britain’s most famous celebrity couple, have made millions portraying their relationship as a perfect marriage.

“Abbie lived in their house for two years and she heard their blazing rows and in fact it’s got so bad that at Christmas it reached breaking point and she actually heard David say to her that he wanted to split.

“I have spent the past five days interviewing Abbie and we have gone through forensic detail about her time with them during the two years she spent with the Beckhams. In the later stages she kept a diary of what was going on.

“She became very close to Victoria. She not only worked for her, she was a friend of Victoria.

“What’s clear is that Victoria is absolutely madly in love with him and would do anything to stay with him and David hasn’t been feeling the same over the past few months.”

He declined to say how much the nanny had been paid for the story.
