Fall in deafness compensation claims

THE number of army deafness compensation claims fell slightly since Defence Minister Michael Smith abolished an early settlement scheme, it emerged yesterday.

Payouts to date have cost the state €251 million, with the department estimating the total compensation bill at €350 million.

However, the Department of Defence said a marked decline was noted during the month of August shortly after the Government abolished an out-of-court settlement measure.
