Soldier and police targeted in Afghan attacks

A US soldier and four police officers were killed in rebel attacks in Afghanistan, while three civilians were injured by gunfire following the bombing of an American patrol.

The soldier was shot when his unit was ambushed on Tuesday in Deh Rawood, 280 miles southwest of the capital, Kabul. He was evacuated to a nearby base but pronounced dead by doctors.

Also yesterday, Taliban militants ambushed a convoy carrying the police chief of the Dishu district of Helmand province, killing four officers and abducting two others.
