BRITISH troops could start handing over to Iraqi forces next year, Britain’s Defence Secretary John Reid said yesterday.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Tony Blair said he had not expected the ferocity of the insurgency in Iraq, but he insisted British troops would stay as long as the Iraqi government needed them.

Mr Reid insisted no date had yet been set for pulling British soldiers out of Iraq.
