GARDAÍ face the prospect of making multiple arrests after bin tax opponents vowed to continue their protests following the jailing of Dublin West TD Joe Higgins and Socialist Party councillor Clare Daly for their part in the campaign.

Fingal County Council will this weekend try to retrieve five of its bin lorries, which have been blockaded at housing estates for up to a week, after a High Court order was issued giving gardaí powers to arrest anyone interfering with the vehicles.

But protesters pledged last night to continue their campaign of civil disobedience which threatens to spread in the city and county amid widespread shock at the severity of the sentences handed down.
