S Tulasi was sleeping in a room at the restaurant when the huge waves struck on Sunday in the holiday resort of Penang. The swirling waters swept her parents out of the restaurant.

Luckily, her parents later managed to claw their way back to the badly-damaged building.

Others were not so lucky. Fisherman Zulkfli Mohd Noor, aged 42, and his wife lost their five children.

Zulkifli said his family was collecting fish left stranded on the seabed when the sea water was briefly sucked out to sea before coming pounding back in the tidal waves.

Malaysia’s death toll stands at 60 with 100 others missing.
