THE leader of a banned Basque pro-independence party has been remanded in custody on suspicion of being a leader of the armed separatist group ETA.

Arnaldo Otegi, one of the most prominent pro-independence militants in the Basque region, was held in Madrid yesterday and must pay a €398,000 bail bond for his release.
