BRITISH Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon launched a bid to save his political career yesterday, shifting blame for the Dr David Kelly row away from himself and the Government.

Mr Hoon made a series of categoric denials at the Hutton Inquiry when asked about events leading up to the scientist's apparent suicide.

On the decision to interview Dr Kelly after he came forward as Andrew Gilligan's source: "He [Chief of Defence Staff] had responsibility for military matters; the Permanent Secretary had responsibility for personnel matters; and I was responsible for political leadership of the department [Ministry of Defence]. Therefore, as far as any personnel issues were concerned, the responsibility was clearly that of the Permanent Secretary [Kevin Tebbit]."
