Ahern wants reference to God in EU constitution

TAOISEACH Bertie Ahern has come down firmly in support of having a reference to God or at least to Christianity in the new European Constitution.

However, Foreign Minister Brian Cowan said it would not be a make or break issue when it came to accepting the final version of the constitution.

Current and future EU member states have been divided over including a reference to God in the preamble to the document. Ireland’s position up to now is that while we would like to have the reference we would not push for it and would only support it if it was not divisive.
