FIGS, used for thousands of years to fight a host of ailments, can prevent harmful bacteria contaminating food, scientists said yesterday.

Tests showed that extracts from the humble fruit inhibit the growth and survival of the poisoning bugs E.coli and salmonella.

The American researchers suggest fig juice could be added to food products to make them safer.
