Island’s population decimated

ABOUT 1,000 people died when tidal waves crashed over an isolated island in India’s Andaman chain where many thousands more are feared to have died, a coastguard official said.

“We have only 500 survivors on Chowra, the rest were totally washed away,” the senior official said.

The deaths pushed the toll on the Andamans to at least 4,000.
