Why the Government's key targets will not be met

THE Government is set to miss reaching many of the key targets set out in its Road Safety Strategy 2004-2006 which was designed to reduce the number of deaths on Irish roads.

Why the Government's key targets will not be met

An analysis of 10 of the main objectives highlighted in the strategy which was launched three years ago by the former Transport Minister, Seamus Brennan shows that most of the targets relating to greater safety and improved driving behaviour among drivers are unlikely to be reached before the end of its timeframe next December.

Mr Brennan's successor, Martin Cullen already accepts that there is a slim chance of reducing the annual total of road fatalities to below 300 this year.
