Americans think New Orleans should be rebuilt on safer ground

MORE than half of Americans think the flood-ravaged areas of New Orleans should be abandoned and rebuilt on safer ground, according to a survey.

The delayed response to the disaster and rising death toll have cast a dark shadow over public mood in the US.

Almost two-thirds of those surveyed in a new poll said the country was headed in the wrong direction, up 6% on last month.
