State compo costs could hit €90m

THE taxpayer is facing a bill of up to €90 million if all the compensation cases currently being taken against the State are successful.

And another 4,500 people might sue the Government after being involved in incidents reported by state authorities, including 4,000 potential medical negligence cases.

The Government has already paid out an average of €20,000 in the 260 claims that have been settled or gone to court, at a cost of €5m in just a little over 18 months.
