Sunday edition of Star set to hit other tabloids
The first edition of the Star on Sunday will be published on October 5 with an initial print run of 150,000.
The joint-venture, led by Independent Newspapers, could hit sales of another of its papers, the Sunday World, according to a media expert.
“The new paper is a worry for the Sunday World. So many of the Star’s readers buy the Sunday World on Sunday,” said Richard Law, managing director of Starcom Mediavest.
The Sunday World has already been hit by the success of Ireland on Sunday.
Tabloids account for around 60% of the Sunday market and the News of the World, the Sunday Mirror and the Sunday People are also likely to be affected. Independent Newspapers will also be hoping the new title will help stem the circulation growth of Ireland on Sunday.
The biggest Sunday tabloid seller is the Sunday World at 280,000 copies while the News of the World and Ireland on Sunday both sell around 170,000 each week.
A number of high profile columnists have been recruited to write for the Sunday Star including hurling star DJ Carey, impresario Louis Walsh and GAA commentator Micheal Ó Muirchéartaigh.
The 96-page newspaper will have the official title ‘The Irish Daily Star on Sunday’ and will be printed at The Irish Times plant at Citywest, Dublin.
The Daily Star has been a successful 50/50 venture for Independent and Express Newspapers which owns the title in Britain. The Irish Daily Star sells on average 110,000 copies a day.
New appointments to the paper include several reporters from the now defunct Dublin Daily.
