The chip shop owner's son had lived in on the street of rows of terraces all his life. The Beeston area of Leeds has long been run-down with many single men and students renting cheap flats and bedsits in what were once family homes.

In recent years, many immigrant families have made the area their home and although some have prospered BMWs and Mercedes park outside their homes they have remained in a community which has largely escaped the racial tensions which have scarred other parts of northern England.
