REFERENCES to God are not likely to be included in the new EU constitution, the Taoiseach said yesterday.

The Government hopes to conclude negotiations on the constitution during Ireland’s EU presidency.

While the issue is not regarded as a major sticking point in the negotiations, the matter still has to be handled sensitively as around 10 countries from the 25 EU member states, support a reference to God or Christian values and tradition in the preamble of the constitution.
