Five years for spiking drink
Michael Wright is believed to be the first person in Britain to be jailed for spiking a woman’s drink with a controversial date rape drug.
The bouncer tipped the chemical GHB into the victim’s drink from a water bottle, saying it was vodka.
The victim, who is in her 20s, met Wright, 36, of Eastgarth, Newbiggin Hall, Newcastle, while out with female friends in Newcastle in April.
She and Wright, whom she knew, went to a bar where he ordered two vodka and Cokes, then laced the drink. Shortly after, the woman collapsed unconscious and was taken to hospital, where she recovered.
At Newcastle Crown Court earlier this week, Wright, denied the charge but was convicted after a three-day hearing.
As well as the five-year jail term, Wright was banned from working as a doorman or behind a bar for 10 years. He must also register as a sex offender for life.
