10,000 DART commuters delayed over fault

NEARLY 10,000 people had to find an alternative way of getting to work in Dublin yesterday when Dart services were disrupted by a major overhead line fault.

Fortunately, the fault was rectified in the afternoon and services fully restored in time for homeward bound travellers.

Rail services between Bray and Dalkey were closed after 5pm on Wednesday evening after significant damage to overhead lines at Shankill.

Damage was caused to about 250 metres of wire and other elements connected to the overhead system.

While Iarnród Éireann don't believe the fault was caused by vandalism, they have not ruled it out. Repair crews worked through Wednesday night. Initially, it was hoped the line could be opened by 8am yesterday morning but it was not until just after 2pm when repair work was completed.

While the repair work was going on Iarnród Éireann provided limited bus transfer service. Dublin Bus also honoured commuter rail tickets. Last December minor subsidence on the track beside Fairview Station and Dublin Port Tunnel caused services to be disrupted. Services were again upset earlier last month because of a landslip between Greystones and Bray.`
