Brentford have contacted police following a “dangerous” and “potentially very harmful” incident which involved an “item being kicked from a height towards the field of play” in their 2-1 defeat against Liverpool.
The club have commented after footage of an individual appearing to hit a rugby ball towards the Gtech Community Stadium pitch from a nearby rooftop during Saturday’s match circulated on social media.
A statement from the Bees read: “Brentford are aware of an incident involving an item being kicked from a height towards the field of play during Saturday’s match against Liverpool.
“Such behaviour is dangerous and potentially very harmful.
“The matter has been referred to the police and the club are supporting the relevant authorities in their investigation to help identify those responsible and take appropriate action, which may result in criminal prosecution.
“The matchday safety of fans, staff, players and officials is of utmost importance, and the club will support all efforts to ensure action is taken.”
Alexander Isak struck a late winner as Liverpool came from behind to beat nine-man Brentford.
The victory carried Liverpool above Brentford into fifth, with the Bees one place back in the Premier League table.
