'Everyone knows what Evan is capable of doing': Ferguson getting closer to Brighton return

Brighton and Hove Albion have provided an update on Evan Ferguson’s comeback, with manager Fabian Hurzeler admitting ‘he’s getting closer,’ without tabling an estimated timeline.

The Ireland striker’s loan spell at AS Roma was cut short through an ankle injury after 22 appearances and five goals.

“He’s getting closer, is in his rehab (but I can’t give a clear timescale for when he will be back),” said the German before outlining the credentials that made the 21-year-old one of the youngest Premier League hot properties.

"Everyone knows what Evan is capable of doing. He proved it a few years ago here at Brighton.

"I think he was one of the best strikers in the Premier League, so hopefully he can get back on track."

Ferguson was one of five senior players omitted from Brighton’s squad for the league phase of the UEFA Conference League campaign but that can be altered before the knockout rounds.

Mental, as well as physical, wellbeing is the priority for the striker.

"Hopefully he gets his mind in the right position," the manager added.

"I think that’s the key after these kinds of injuries; that you get back on track and have complete trust in your own body.

"Only if you feel really safe and trust your own body are you capable of playing at the highest level.

"That’s the main focus now, and then let’s see what happens."
