Ireland’s hat-trick hero Jack Moylan will, after all, get an immediate chance for a second cap in this Thursday’s friendly against Qatar at Lansdowne Road (7.45pm).
Former Shelbourne attacker Moylan became the first player since David Kelly 39 years ago to mark his bow with a treble when he went on a second-half spree in the 5-0 rout of Grenada in Murcia last Saturday week.
Manager Heimir Hallgrímsson had retained only three of that squad for the second part of the summer series, in order to widen his options for the Uefa Nations League kick off in September, but withdrawals have forced the Icelander into bringing two more into the fold for Thursday.
Defender Dara O’Shea is the other player recalled and, like Lincoln City’s Moylan, he will depart the squad while the remainder travel to Montreal for the last friendly against World Cup bound Canada on June 5.
Injuries have ruled out Middlesbrough duo Alan Browne and Alex Gilbert, while Southampton pair Finn Azaz and Ryan Manning have also been forced to withdraw. They were due to contest last Saturday’s Championship playoff before being replaced by Boro due to expulsion over the ‘Spygate’ controversy.
Additionally, Strasbourg defender Andrew Omobamidele will miss the window through injury.
Scottish-based midfielders Jamie McGrath (Hibernian) Killian Phillips (St Mirren) have received late call-ups for both matches.
Charlton Athletic midfielder Conor Coventry and Bohemians’ Dawson Devoy were both included in the squad but will only report after the Qatar game.
Hibernian striker Owen Elding will also remain with the squad for training purposes. Elding will integrate with the senior environment while the final stages of his citizenship process is completed.
