Spain star Lamine Yamal has spoken out about the âintolerableâ Islamophobic chanting heard during his sideâs friendly against Egypt on Tuesday night.
The Barcelona winger appeared visibly upset by the chanting at the RCDE Stadium in his home city.
The Spanish football federation (RFEF) condemned the acts, while Catalan regional police said they were investigating.
Yamal posted on Instagram on Wednesday: âI am a Muslim. Yesterday at the stadium the chant âthe one who doesnât jump is a Muslimâ was heard.
âI know I was playing for the rival team and it wasnât something personal against me, but as a Muslim person it doesnât stop being disrespectful and something intolerable.
âI understand not all fans are like this, but to those who sing these things, using a religion as a mockery on the field makes you ignorant and racist people.
âFootball is to be enjoyed and encouraged, not to disrespect people for who they are or what they believe in.
âWith that being said, thank you to the people who came to cheer us on, see you at the World Cup.â
The match was played under FIFA jurisdiction. World footballâs governing body will await reports from officials in attendance before deciding whether to take further action.
