Ireland are unlikely to face Manchester United’s in-form Patrick Dorgu in the World Cup playoff final after the Denmark international was ruled out for 10 weeks.
Both nations were drawn in the same pathway to the summer finals, meaning a victory for Ireland in Czechia on March 26 and Denmark beating North Macedonia would set up a decider at Lansdowne Road three days.
Dorgu has become a mainstay for both club and country, exemplified by his stunning volleyed finish in United’s 3-2 win at Arsenal on Sunday.
However, concerns arose when he couldn’t finish the game at the Emirates. While caretaker manager Michael Carrick initially attributed the limp to cramp, it has transpired to be a hamstring tear.
Dorgu was recruited from Italian club Lecce 12 months ago as a left sided defender but has flourished lately further forward under Carrick. He also rattled the net in the 2-0 win over Manchester City seven days previously.
United have eight Premier League games before the March international break after which Dorgu was primed to lead Denmark’s charge towards the World Cup in North America.
Now, that seems a stretch given their semi-final is eight weeks away.
The Athletic are reporting the layoff to be 10 weeks, albeit the precise timeline is to be confirmed.
Ireland have already lost Josh Cullen and Adam Idah through injury for the playoffs.
