Corkman Brian Barry-Murphy reportedly on wishlist of stranded Wolves

Corkman Brian Barry-Murphy is being linked with the Wolves managerial position if the rock bottom Premier League club execute their second sacking of the season.

According to Talksport, an eighth straight defeat for Rob Edwards at Manchester United on Tuesday could convince the Wolves hierarchy to bring the brief stint of Edwards to a premature end.

He controversially walked out on Middlesbrough after just four months in November to rejoin the club he played for but there’s been no managerial bounce.

Their 11-game losing streak, a Premier League record, leaves Wolves marooned at the foot of the table on just two points from 18 games, a mammoth 16 points off safety.

Irish international Matt Doherty last week urged his teammates to avoid being remembered as “cowards” amidst their seemingly perilous plight.

Edwards would become the first manager in top-flight history to lose eight games on the trot unless he stops the rot at Old Trafford.

That, reportedly, has triggered a contingency plan by the club’s Chinese owners, Fosun International.

They recently promoted former Everton and Wigan Athletic defender Matt Jackson to technical director and Talksport claim that Cardiff City boss Barry-Murphy is one of three potential replacements ‘sounded out’ by the leadership.

Derek McInnes, in charge of current Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts, is another, along with former boss Gary O’Neill – who spurned a return immediately after Vitor Pereira’s sacking.

Barry-Murphy – son of Cork GAA legend Jimmy – is highly regarded on the UK managerial circuit.

The 47-year-old is on track to deliver on his mandate of taking Cardiff City straight back to the Championship by leading the League One table after 22 games.

He has previous experience as boss of Rochdale and Manchester City’s development squad.

There’s no guarantee of Barry-Murphy being amenable to uprooting after just six months in Wales, when the likelihood is Cardiff and Wolves will be both operating in the same division next season.
