Katie McCabe's first Arsenal goal of the season took 16 games to arrive but sure was worth waiting for — even if her international teammate Courtney Brosnan will disagree.
The Ireland captain finally got off the mark in her 11th Gunners campaign with a stunning strike to open the scoring in Saturday's early showdown with Everton. With barely ten minutes on the clock at Goodison Park, the 30-year-old broke her drought to give the European champions the lead.
Ireland goalkeeper Brosnan, who has been in sparkling form with another player of the match award last weekend, produced a great stop to deny Mariona Caldentey with a strong low hand. It looked as though Everton had cleared the danger but in trademark fashion McCabe hovered in to view to meet the clearance around 35 yards out, controlled the ball on her chest before unleashing a wicked, swerving effort that arrowed in to the far corner beyond Brosnan's despairing dive.
What a way to score your first goal of the season 😮💨

Japanese international Honoka Hayashi equalised soon after for the hosts but Arsenal regained the lead on 15 minutes as Alessia Russo's effort was adjudged to have crossed the line despite Brosnan's best efforts.
McCabe rounded off a very satisfying day with a late assist for Olivia Smith's 87th-minute third, the Canadian star sealing all three points which moved Arsenal up to second in the table.
