Cole Palmer sparkled but so did Michael Olise for Bayern as, not for the first time, goals from the boot of Harry Kane consigned Chelsea to defeat.
The Blues were back at the top table after two seasons away, in which they just happened to lift both the Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup. They arrived late at the Allianz Arena however, their bus falling foul to traffic.
Did it have an effect? Perhaps not but two goals conceded in the space of seven first-half minutes - Trevoh Chalobah's unlucky own goal and a Kane penalty - ultimately proved decisive.
Peerless Palmer hit back quickly but a second after the break from Kane, a regular scorer against Chelsea in his Tottenham days, put the game beyond their reach.
Bavaria will always be a special place for Chelsea fans given that they beat Bayern in their backyard in 2012 to lift the trophy but this was evidence that Maresca's current crop surely have a long way to go before matching that.
Kick-off saw Nicolas Jackson, borrowed for the season from Chelsea, watching on the Bayern bench, as he had done on Sunday when he made a non-scoring debut against Hamburg. Palmer had also been a substitute that day, marking his comeback from a groin injury with a goal in the 2-2 draw at Brentford.
Enzo Maresca, in his first Champions League match as a manager, replicated the starting line-up that triumphed against Paris Saint-Germain the Club World Cup final in July, save for the injured Levi Colwill.
That meant Palmer operating on the right and being given license to cut in and create. The England man did just that in the sixth minute and immediately set up Enzo Fernandez at the near post. The Argentinian opted to take a touch instead of hitting it first time however, enabling Konrad Laimer to block.
Marc Cucurella headed wide as Chelsea continued to look dangerous but it was Bayern who took the lead, in slightly odd circumstances in the 20th minute.
Referee José María Sánchez was involved by getting in the way of a free-kick. That led to a drop ball that saw Bayern quickly feed Michael Olise on the right wing, the former Crystal Palace man slipped past Joao Pedro and saw his cross bounce in off the knee of Chalobah, who was under pressure from the looming figure of Dayot Upamecano.
The Spanish official was centre stage again five minutes later by awarding Bayern a penalty on the advice of a linesman. Moises Caicedo was the culprit, allowing Kane to turn him on the edge of the box and getting his attempt to retrieve the situation all wrong.
Kane sent Robert Sanchez the wrong way to record his 94th goal in 102 Bayern games, or his 12th in 11 this season if you prefer.
Palmer's stats are none to shabby though and he marked his 100th Chelsea game with a 45th goal. The former Manchester City man created it himself with a burst forward after a Bayern attack broke down and finished it too, firing high past Manuel Neuer following a one-two with Malo Gusto.
Maresca was cautioned in the aftermath, seemingly for insisting Bayern defender Jonathan Tah should have been sent off for an off-the-ball assassination of Pedro. Referee Sanchez decided to book Tah as well but presumably Maresca realised the Spaniard had benefited his team by letting play continue in the first place.
Tah was hooked at the break to stop him getting a second yellow but Vincent Kompany had to shuffle his defence again within six minutes of the second period when Josip Stanisic fell heavily.
Diaz, recruited from Liverpool in the summer, fired a decent chance straight at Sanchez to Kane's frustration, which grew when the goalkeeper's legs blocked a shot following good work by Laimer to set up the England skipper.
Sanchez is a keeper with an error in him but pulled off a fine save, throwing himself to his right to bat away Olise's effort. The France star knew he should have buried it too.
Chelsea were rocking and a careless moment from Gusto, hitherto on top of his game, cost his side. The defender, under pressure as Chelsea tried to play out from the back, succeeded only in poking to Kane, who swept forward and planted a low shot into the far corner. It was goal number 21 in 26 Champions League games for the Germans. He also bagged 21 for Spurs.
Maresca made changes, including sending on Alejandro Garnacho, but Palmer, having burst through to beat Neuer in the 89th minute, was denied the prospect of a dramatic comeback by a raised flag.
Jackson came on in stoppage-time but the striker Chelsea eventually decided they didn't need on deadline day, did not net against his erstwhile employers.
