Evan Ferguson produced another stellar display in another Roma victory in a difficult personal week.

The Irish striker’s grandfather Fergus (Fergie) Ferguson passed away on Thursday, just two days before Evan led the line against Pisa.

It was his second straight Serie A start and, despite incurring a first-half booking, 10 minutes into the second half he teed up Matías Soulé for the only goal at the Stadio Romeo Anconetani.

Using all his strength and poise to control the ball with his back to goal, his layoff allowed Matías Soulé to rifle his shot home for what proved the winner.

It sealed a perfect start to the reign of Gian Piero Gasperini, following up last week’s openin night win over Bologna.

Ferguson has emerged as his first-choice striker, playing the same 73 minutes as he did on his debut and again being replaced by Artem Dovbyk.

The 20-year-old will return to Ireland on Sunday to be with his family at this difficult time.

Ireland’s will assemble on Monday ahead of the opening World Cup qualification, beginning on Saturday at home to Hungary (7.45pm).
