Wayne Rooney says he would have played for Ireland had Mick McCarthy called him up for the senior team rather than the U21s.

An Everton player at the time, Rooney told the Stick to Football podcast that he spoke to Ireland international Lee Carsley about representing the country of his paternal grandparents.
