Cork City have added Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Rio Shipston on loan until June as transfer activity finally ratchets up on Leeside.
Recruits have been slow to materialise with life for City back in the Premier Division due to start a month on Tuesday against John Caulfield’s Galway United at a packed Turner’s Cross.
Shipston is a 20-year-old central midfielder who has made three first-team appearances since progressing through the youth system of his local club. They are currently tenth in the English Championship.
“This is one we’ve been working on for a long time,” explained Rebels boss Tim Clancy.
“We’ve been in discussions with Sheffield Wednesday and Rio for a while now and we’re delighted to have him in training with us on Monday.” Shipston will wear the No 4 jersey.
Winger Alex Dunne was signed from St Patrick’s Athletic, goalkeeping duo Tein Troost and Conor Brann were enlisted, while Evan McLaughlin opted to commit for the season despite interest from elsewhere.
City begin a series of friendlies on Friday by welcoming Bohemians to Bishopstown, then hosting Munster rivals Treaty Unted and Waterford, before they square up to Carrigaline United in the Munster Senior Cup on Friday, January 27 at Ballea Park.
