This is what Uefa aimed for by introducing a third club competition, countries far and wide prolonging their presence in Europe.

Shamrock Rovers, like their Cypriots opponents tonight, are national champions. New Saints and Larne, whom they’ll face later in the competition, are too but the Champions League no longer caters for the outsiders.
