Chris Hughton sacked by Ghana as FAI close in on Lee Carsley

Ghana have sacked manager Chris Hughton.

Former Ireland defender Chris Hughton has been sacked by Ghana following confirmation of their AFCON group stage exit.

Monday night’s capitulation against Mozambique, which saw them conceded twice in stoppage time to squander victory, left the Black Stars third in their group behind Pico Lopes’s Cape Verde and Egypt.

Any remote chance of snaffling one of the best third-placed tickets into the knockout stages extinguished on Tuesday in the aftermath of results elsewhere.

The former Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion boss had his contract, due to run until December, cancelled by his employers with immediate effect.

Their statement said: “The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect.

“The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

“The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.” 

Hughton had been linked with the vacant Ireland post but it’s believed the FAI are in England at present seeking to conclude negotiations on a deal that’ll see Lee Carsley recommended to the board next Tuesday as the preferred candidate.
