Des will be fondly remembered by Irish football fans for his part in persuading Jack Charlton to take on the job of manager of the Republic of Ireland senior men’s team back in 1986, a move that led to the Jack’s Army era and appearances at Euro ’88, Italia ’90 and USA ’94.

The Football Association of Ireland is deeply saddened to learn of the death of our former President and Honorary Secretary Des Casey, a great football man who served his hometown club Dundalk FC, the FAI and UEFA with such distinction over so many years.

Des will be fondly remembered by Irish football fans for his part in persuading Jack Charlton to take on the job of manager of the Republic of Ireland senior men’s team back in 1986, a move that led to the Jack’s Army era and appearances at Euro ’88, Italia ’90 and USA ’94.
