James McClean Twitter account deleted after controversial Brexit-related tweet

Never one to duck the limelight, James McClean has put himself at the heart of reaction to the Brexit campaign.

The Derry native tweeted a picture of himself and Sinn Fein politician Martin McGuinness, captioned: “Reignition of the flames of reunification #BorderPatrol #UnitedIreland.”

His comments followed Sinn Féin calls for a border poll on Northern Ireland joining the Republic, given Britain have voted to leave the UK but the North voted to Remain.

His account was deleted soon after - not the first time Twitter accounts belonging to the footballer have disappeared.

People aren’t too surprised that the account disappeared.

Or that the player caused controversy in the first place.

Given the the Republic of Ireland take on France in the last 16 of the Euros on Sunday, most people would prefer the winger concentrated on his football for now.

Although many more enjoy a good controversy.
