LvG poking himself in the face was the most compelling moment of the match last night

Even the Dutch manager’s own stationery is conspiring against him.

For many viewers the highlight of last night’s FA Cup match was spotting the Dutch manager accidentally poke himself in the face with a pencil.

To be fair to van Gaal, it was a pretty dull game.

His side cruised to an easy 3-0 victory against Shrewsbury, who never looked in any danger of causing an upset against the Premier League side.

The football on offer was boring enough for fans to jump on the pencil’s near-miss.

Van Gaal could have poked his eye out with that pencil and would still have blamed it on Murphy's Law.

We considered a gag about the pencil showing more attacking threat than the Manchester United team, but we’re better than that.
