Marc Wilson could miss Euro 2016 after knee injury

Irish international defender Marc Wilson has suffered suspected medial ligament damage this weekend, with Stoke manager Mark Hughes revealing that confirmation of that injury could yet keep Wilson out of Euro 2016.

“Marc’s down at the moment, as you would expect,” said Hughes.

“He’s looking forward to the European Championship which is what he wants to be involved in at the end of this season so I’m not sure if his injury will make him a doubt for that, we hope not.”

Stoke City will visit Manchester United in the Premier League on Tuesday, by which point they may have recruited a new defender to provide cover for the injured Ryan Shawcross, Geoff Cameron and Marc Wilson.

“If it’s bad news for Marc then it might make sense to bring in a short-term solution,” Hughes revealed after the weekend’s FA Cup loss to Crystal Palace.

“If they’re available, we didn’t even know because that wasn’t the intention before so we’ll have to see where we are Monday.

“There’s no point bringing in anybody that’s available. They’ve got to be the right quality and able to do the job you ask of them if needed, we’ll just have to see what’s out there.”
