WATCH: Ferdinand and Scholes react to suggestion that United are the new Liverpool

Manchester United legends Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes had a tough time staying positive on BT Sport last night.

The pair joined Michael Owen and Gary Lineker to analyse Manchester United’s defeat to Worlfsburg last night - which saw the side knocked out of the Champions League.

No doubt hoping to get a rise out the two, Lineker suggested that Manchester United were in danger of following the route of arch-enemies Liverpool - formerly great clubs falling on hard times.

The physical reaction said it all - Scholes appeared so upset that Lineker said to him: “Don’t cry Paul!”.

“I’m thinking about it,” he answered, as ex-Liverpool player Owen struggled to contain a grin.

Scholes and Ferdinand were both scathing in their criticism of Louis van Gaal’s current team with Scholes delivering the damning assessment: "With an average team, you get average performances!"
