Schuster was a huge fan of Bayern Munich and their midfield star Schweinsteiger.

Friends of the 21-year-old contacted the footballer on Facebook and told him that the Irish student had been a huge fan. They included a picture of Schweinsteiger posing for a photo with Nick.

The World Cup winner responded to the post today, sending a message of condolence to the young man’s family and reposting the picture of the two.

Translated, his post read: “The news makes me very sad. I wish you, the family and all the members of Nick a lot of strength for this difficult time.

“I would like to express my condolences also all other sufferers of this accident.”
