Rio Ferdinand has been backed to become the next manager at West Ham by Harry Redknapp, who joked he could also return to the club as director of football.

The Irons are understood to be close to appointing a successor to Sam Allardyce, who left Upton Park at the end of the season when his contract was not renewed.
