John Delaney: Blatter resignation gives chance for “real change”

CEO of the FAI John Delaney has welcomed the news that Fifa President Sepp Blatter is to resign from his position.

Delaney was outspoken in his opposition to Blatter, calling for his resignation ahead of last Friday’s Presidential vote.

But the good news wasn’t long in coming for Delaney…

"This is good news for world football and not before time," said Delaney.

"These are changes that we had called for and had hoped would come. We believe there is now an opportunity for real change and reform at FIFA.

"It is important that this opportunity to change the culture within FIFA at the highest levels is not passed up."

Blatter, 79, has been President since 1998, winning his latest election only four days ago.

But pressure increased on Fifa as it came to light that US$10m was supposedly paid to former Vice-President Jack Warner from the 2010 World Cup, who was indicted by the US last week.

It was later alleged that current Secretary General Jerome Valcke had authorised the transfer of money.

An extraordinary congress will be held "as soon as possible" to elect Blatter's successor.
