David Beckham has revealed that former boss Alex Ferguson made him shave off his mohawk in the toilets ahead of the Community Shield match in 2000.

Beckham said Ferguson was furious when he saw the Manchester United star's new hairstyle before the match against Chelsea in Wembley.

"I was in the dressing room with an hour to go before kick off when Alex Ferguson saw it and made me shave it off," Beckham said.

"I said no at first and then I saw his face change very quickly so I went and shaved it off in the toilet. He was very strict.”

When Beckham left Manchester United in 2003, relations between him and Ferguson had soured, but he said they now got on well.

"We get on. It was made worse than it actually was,” Beckham said of his battles with the famously prickly Scot. “He was a father figure for me for so many years."

Beckham was speaking in an interview on the ‘Graham Norton Show’, to be aired on Friday night.

The ex-United and England footballer also revealed he regrets some of the hairstyles he tried over the years.

“The cornbraids were a bad decision,” he said. “It was bad timing as well.

“I was going to South Africa at the time with England and ended up meeting Nelson Mandela so that’s why I regret that one."
