Russia can’t afford Capello’s wages

The Russian Football Union cannot afford to pay the wages of national team boss Fabio Capello, according to a member of the governing body’s executive committee.

Sergey Stepashin was quoted as telling Russia’s Interfax news agency that the organisation did not have enough money to pay the Italian.

“I declare that the Russian Football Union does not have enough money to pay Capello’s salary,” Stepashin said.

“When we signed a contract with him, we should have thought about how to fund it. Today we need to find these financial sources.”

Capello has not been paid for five months, according to reports in Russia, with his salary a reported £7m a year.

The former England boss has been in the post since 2012 and saw his side knocked out at the group stage at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The 68-year-old is under contract until the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
