Bayern in seventh heaven after meeting with Pope

Pep Guardiola and members of his Bayern team followed up last night’s seven-one thrashing of Roma with a private audience with Pope Francis.

The met in the Vatican this morning, with pictures emerging in the last hour of Guardiola, players and club officials with the Pontiff.

Pope Frances praised Bayern for their performance in the Champions League last night.

“They played a wonderful game yesterday,” he said, despite it being nearby club Roma who were beaten by the German side.

He was then presented with a personalised Bayern FC jersey by club captains Philip Lahm and Manuel Neuer.

According to a statement on an official Bayern FC forum club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also told the Pope about a special “gift” donation from the club for him to use as he wishes.

“In the coming year our team will contest a friendly match,” said Rummenigge. “Out of the revenues from this, we will place €1 million at the disposal of the Holy Father for charitable purposes. Pope Francis may then himself decide how these funds should be used, to spontaneously help people in need wherever they are in the world and regardless of their faith.”
