Agger pays for Danish team to attend Homeless World Cup

Former Liverpool defender Daniel Agger stepped in to give a team from Denmark the opportunity to attend the Homeless World Cup.

Agger is the Danish football captain and heard that fundraising to send an eight-man team from Denmark to the tournament in Chile had fallen short of the amount needed.

Agger contacted the charity involved and offered to pay the difference himself. The amount was 20,000 Danish krone, or more than €2,600.

The annual Homeless World Cup tournament is described on the organisation’s website as:

“an opportunity for players to represent their country and meet and build relationships with homeless people from other countries. It also lights up the hearts and minds of everyone it touches and changes people's attitudes to homelessness.”

Agger is following in the footsteps of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who last month paid for a special needs team from Sweden to go to their World Cup.
