Probe into Leeds Utd 'spy cameras'

Police have begun an investigation at Leeds United after spy cameras were apparently found at the Elland Road stadium in a security sweep ordered by controversial new boss Massimo Cellino.

West Yorkshire Police would not confirm details of their inquiry but, according to reports, officers were called to the ground on Wednesday after surveillance equipment was found in the boardroom and toilets.

The police inquiry centred around an allegation of theft, relating to the club funds apparently used to buy the cameras.

Detective Superintendent Pat Twiggs, head of crime for Leeds, said: “We can confirm that police are investigating an allegation of theft relating to Leeds United Football Club following a report made by the club made on April 9.

“The investigation relates to an allegation of club funds being misappropriated for the purchase of technical equipment. Inquiries are at an early stage and we are not in a position to give any further information about the nature of the allegation.”

Mr Cellino won an appeal against a decision to block him from owning Leeds United because of a conviction for tax evasion in Sardinia, and the Football League announced that he was allowed to be a director of the Championship club this week.

He has agreed a deal to buy a 75% stake in the club.
