The Republic of Ireland fell to a disappointing defeat against Serbia at the Aviva last night but nevertheless managed to make a dream come true for a young supporter.

Domhnall Ó Confhaola shot to national prominence on the Late Late Toy Show last November when he was a little caught for words in front of his hero and Ireland captain Robbie Keane.

His endearing innocence, not to mention his impressive football knowledge once he composed himself, won over vast swathes of the Irish population that evening and last night they got another chance to see the eight-year-old in action.

Domhnall became the official mascot for the Irish team and led them onto the pitch with stand-in skipper Glenn Whelan.

The young Connemara man looked at ease with the occasion and took it all in his stride as he stood to greet President Michael D Higgins and pose for the team photo prior to kick off.

Despite Robbie not being in attendance last night and the Boys in Green’s defeat, it’ll no doubt live long in Domhnall’s memory.
