Doherty on the double as Ireland U21s battle back

Matt Doherty struck twice as the Republic of Ireland came from behind tonight to get their UEFA Under-21 Championship qualifying campaign off to a winning start in the Faroe Islands.

The Irish were stunned as the hosts took a 14th-minute lead in Toftir through Gilli Sorensen.

Aston Villa midfielder Samir Carruthers levelled nine minutes later but it was not until Wolves defender Doherty grabbed the first of his two in the 68th minute that Ireland took control.

Doherty settled nerves with his second two minutes from time and Millwall’s Aiden O’Brien made the scoreline more emphatic just before the final whistle.

Ireland manager Noel King will feel the victory was well deserved after his side dominated for large spells.

They were caught out early on, however, as Sorensen capitalised on a mistake in the defence to put the Faroes ahead.

Carruthers equalised with a superb individual effort.

The 20-year-old, who joined MK Dons on loan this month, beat three defenders before scoring at the second attempt. Carruthers turned provider for the Republic’s second goal, sending over the corner from which Doherty put his side ahead.

Doherty was not finished there as he claimed his second with time running down and O’Brien punished some hesitant defending to wrap up the scoring.

The result should put the Irish in good heart for the second match of their campaign against Germany in Sligo next month.
