The head of one of Holland’s leading players’ unions says the growing trend of players being relegated to the reserves amid stalled contract negotiations is a “sickening state of affairs”.

Louis Everard, director of Vereniging van Contractspelers (VVCS), made the comments after PSV Eindhoven duo Ola Toivonen and Erik Pieters were told they would find themselves in the second-string team next season if they cannot agree new deals.
