Neville Neville, 63, was questioned on Sunday by detectives from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) investigating an alleged sexual assault in Bury in the early hours of Saturday morning.
He has since been bailed pending further inquiries.
A spokeswoman for GMP said: “Police are investigating a sexual assault which happened in the early hours of Saturday, March 23, 2013, in the North Manor area of Bury.
“A 63-year-old man from Bury was arrested on suspicion of indecent assault and has been bailed till May pending further inquiries.
“Inquiries are on-going.”
As well as representing the interests of his sons, Everton captain Phil and former Manchester United captain, Gary - now an England coach and pundit - Mr Neville is a former director of League One side Bury FC.
His wife, Jill, was the club’s company secretary and last year received the Freedom of Bury in recognition of her service to the club.
He is also a noted sportsman in his own right, playing for Greenmount in the Bolton Cricket League in the 1980s.
The couple’s third child, daughter Tracey Neville, is a former netball player who represented England.
