Whelan returns for Stoke
Transfer targets Danny Graham and Kenwyne Jones were left on the bench by their respective managers as Swansea faced Stoke at the Liberty Stadium.
Graham, the subject of bids from Norwich and Sunderland, missed out for Swansea as Itay Shechter started up front. Michel Vorm, Wayne Routledge and Jonathan de Guzman were the only three players retained from the midweek defeat at Arsenal.
Peter Crouch was preferred to Jones, who has been linked with a move to Swansea, with Asmir Begovic, Glenn Whelan and Charlie Adam all returning to the starting line-up and Dean Whitehead filling in at right-back.
